At least 16 people lost their lives and 96 others sustained injuries in rain and thunderstorm-related incidents across various districts of Sindh, according to a report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh on Thursday.
The report highlighted that severe weather conditions, accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms and lightning strikes, caused significant human losses and injuries in several parts of the province over the past few days.
According to PDMA Sindh Director General Salman Shah, the worst-hit district was Shaheed Benazirabad, where 10 people, including six men and four women, lost their lives, while 32 others were injured in weather-related incidents.
In Kashmore, three fatalities were reported, including two men and one woman, while nine people suffered injuries. Ghotki also witnessed substantial damage, where one woman lost her life and 54 individuals were reported injured.
Meanwhile, in Tharparkar, a woman died after being struck by lightning during the ongoing spell of adverse weather. Another fatality was reported from Qambar district, where an elderly woman lost her life during heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity. In addition to the human toll, 38 houses have been damaged and 102 trees have fallen due to severe weather conditions.
The PDMA stated that rescue and relief operations were continuing in the affected districts. Local authorities, have been mobilized to provide assistance to assess damages caused by the severe weather.
DG PDMA Salman Shah said that the authority is closely monitoring the situation across the province and remained in constant coordination with district administrations. He added that all District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) had been directed to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for any emergency situation arising from further adverse weather conditions.
The PDMA has urged citizens to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities and the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
