Israeli minister unveils settlement and displacement expansion plans

Published on: May 15, 2026 6:01 PM

Itamar Ben-Gvir has announced controversial plans involving new settlement expansion in occupied territories and alleged displacement policies targeting Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, while also referring to potential settlement activity in Lebanon. His remarks were made during a public event in Jerusalem marking the anniversary of Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem.

During the address, Ben-Gvir stated that the government supports policies encouraging migration from Gaza and the West Bank, while also backing settlement expansion in Lebanon. He further declared that Israel would act firmly against individuals it considers attackers, using language that drew strong reactions from international observers and human rights groups.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the ongoing situation in Gaza remains highly volatile, with continued violations of ceasefire arrangements that began in October 2025. According to available figures, hundreds of people have been killed and thousands injured during ongoing military operations, intensifying humanitarian concerns across the region.

Similarly, tensions remain high in Lebanon, where ceasefire agreements have also been repeatedly violated, leading to thousands of reported casualties since March 2025. Observers note that the fragile security situation continues to escalate, with repeated military actions contributing to instability across multiple conflict zones.

In addition, Ben-Gvir highlighted strict measures imposed on Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, including limitations on food, education and communication facilities. He also referenced legislation passed in March allowing the death penalty for certain prisoners, a move that has drawn criticism from international organizations and human rights monitors.

Furthermore, Palestinian and Israeli rights groups report that more than 9,600 Palestinian prisoners are currently held in detention facilities, where concerns persist regarding treatment, medical access and living conditions. The developments have increased international scrutiny, with calls for legal review and greater accountability amid rising regional tensions.
