Alex Fitzpatrick seizes thrilling lead at Truist Championship

Published on: May 10, 2026 2:32 PM

English golfer Alex Fitzpatrick delivered a brilliant performance to claim a one-shot lead at the PGA Truist Championship after shooting a seven-under-par 64 during the third round in Charlotte, North Carolina. Fitzpatrick finished the day at 14-under overall after producing eight birdies and only one bogey at Quail Hollow. Moreover, the impressive round strengthened his growing reputation during the early stages of his PGA Tour career.

The 27-year-old rookie moved ahead of Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan, who also impressed with a strong 64 to remain just one shot behind heading into the final round on Sunday. Fitzpatrick created separation on the front nine by collecting five birdies and taking a two-shot lead at the turn. Furthermore, his confident putting and course familiarity helped him maintain momentum throughout the round.

Fitzpatrick earned his PGA Tour card only weeks ago after winning the Zurich Classic alongside his older brother Matt Fitzpatrick, marking a breakthrough moment in his professional career. He followed that success with a top-10 finish at the Cadillac Championship in Florida last week, showing consistent improvement and confidence against experienced competition. Consequently, expectations around the young English golfer continue rising rapidly.

The Sheffield-born player admitted he felt excited about the possibility of winning his first solo PGA Tour title in only his third tournament appearance on the circuit. Having previously played regularly at Quail Hollow while attending Wake Forest University nearby, Fitzpatrick appeared comfortable and confident under pressure throughout the day. In addition, he responded strongly after a bogey on the 16th by immediately regaining control with another birdie.

Despite leading the tournament, Fitzpatrick faces strong competition from a crowded leaderboard that includes in-form American golfer Cameron Young, who fired an outstanding eight-under-par 63 during the third round. Young finished two shots behind the leader after recording seven birdies and an eagle despite a late bogey on the final hole. Moreover, his recent victories and strong performances have made him one of the most dangerous challengers.

Young, who recently won the Cadillac Championship and previously secured victory at The Players Championship, described his current form as the best golf of his career so far. The 29-year-old said he remained focused mainly on shot execution and maintaining consistency rather than overthinking situations during tournaments. Therefore, Sunday’s final round promises an intense battle as several players remain firmly in contention for the Truist Championship title.
