Abbas leads Pakistan fightback in Dhaka Test

Published on: May 9, 2026 8:07 PM

Mohammad Abbas produced a brilliant five-wicket haul to help restrict Bangladesh to 413 in the first Test in Dhaka. His disciplined bowling effort gave Pakistan a strong response after the hosts built a solid total on the opening day. Pakistan ended the second day at 179 for one in their first innings.

Bangladesh resumed their innings at 301 for four but lost momentum as Abbas struck early in the morning session. The veteran seamer removed key batters and finished with figures of five for 92 from 34 overs. His performance marked his sixth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had earlier anchored the innings with a century, while Mushfiqur Rahim contributed a patient 71. Despite their efforts, Bangladesh failed to extend their total significantly due to Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Shaheen Shah Afridi also supported with three wickets.

In reply, Pakistan’s batting unit made a confident start with debutant Azan Awais and Imam-ul-Haq putting together a 106-run opening stand. Imam scored 45 before being dismissed, but Azan continued strongly and remained unbeaten on 85 at stumps. Fellow debutant Abdullah Fazal also held firm with an unbeaten 37.

Pakistan ended the day trailing by 234 runs but in a stable position. Imam-ul-Haq praised Abbas for his impact and highlighted the composure shown by the young debutants. The visitors will look to build on their strong start in the next session of play.
