Trump pauses Project Freedom amid Iran talks

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause to “Project Freedom,” the American operation aimed at guiding commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing diplomatic progress in negotiations with Iran.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the decision was made following requests from Pakistan and other countries, as well as what he described as significant progress toward a possible agreement with Iranian representatives.

According to Trump, the United States and relevant parties have mutually agreed to suspend the shipping mission for a short period to determine whether a broader agreement can be finalised and signed.

“Project Freedom,” launched to facilitate the movement of vessels through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, was introduced after prolonged disruptions to maritime traffic linked to tensions involving Iran, the United States, and regional allies.

Despite the temporary suspension of the escort operation, Trump clarified that the broader US blockade against Iran would remain fully in place.

He described the move as part of a broader diplomatic effort following what he called successful military operations against Iran and ongoing negotiations aimed at easing tensions in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, handling a substantial share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to shipping in the area has major implications for global energy markets and international trade.

Trump’s remarks suggest that diplomatic efforts involving regional stakeholders, including Pakistan, may be playing a role in attempts to de-escalate the crisis and secure a negotiated outcome.

No further details were immediately provided regarding the status of talks, the nature of the proposed agreement, or how long the operational pause would remain in effect.

The announcement comes amid continued uncertainty over maritime security in the Gulf and concerns from shipping companies over safe passage through the waterway.

Analysts are closely watching whether the pause signals meaningful diplomatic progress or only a temporary tactical adjustment while negotiations continue. Further developments are expected as discussions between the United States and Iran proceed.
