Pakistan calls for collective response to global instability at SCO moot

Published on: April 29, 2026 1:46 AM

Pakistan on Tuesday warned of a rapidly deteriorating global security environment, urging greater cooperation among member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to counter rising instability, disinformation and conflict.

Addressing the SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Bishkek, Pakistan’s delegation led by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif underscored that the world is witnessing an erosion of the rules-based international order, with geopolitical rivalries, unresolved conflicts and emerging transnational threats reshaping the global landscape.

The statement highlighted how unchecked expansionist ambitions and disregard for international law are pushing the international system towards “might over right,” while the growing information space has enabled disinformation, hate speech and propaganda to destabilise societies and undermine state institutions.

Turning to the Middle East, Pakistan described the ongoing crisis as a “global shock multiplier,” stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward. It reaffirmed Islamabad’s role as a “reliable and trustworthy peacemaker,” committed to facilitating peaceful resolutions amid escalating tensions.

Condemning Israeli actions, the statement said such aggression undermines peace efforts and exacerbates humanitarian crises, while expressing solidarity with Iran over the loss of innocent lives. It called for a stronger, unified response from SCO members in line with the organisation’s founding principles.

On counterterrorism, Pakistan reiterated its longstanding position that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without addressing the root causes of extremism. It pointed to the sacrifices made by its security forces and civilians, rejecting what it termed as politically motivated propaganda against its efforts.

The statement also raised concerns over militant groups operating from Afghan territory, urging credible action and enhanced cooperation on border security.

Emphasising diplomacy over confrontation, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace, including recent efforts that contributed to a temporary ceasefire. It called for resolving all disputes in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

Pakistan concluded by expressing readiness to work with SCO partners for a more stable and cooperative region.

On the sidelines of the SCO Defence ministers meeting, Khawaja Asif also met Defence Ministers of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, he also held a bilateral interaction with the Deputy Defence Minister of Iran.
