Anne Hathaway rejects music career shift after mother mary role

Published on: April 27, 2026 6:08 PM

Anne Hathaway has clarified that she does not plan to transition from acting into a music career despite portraying a pop star in her latest film “Mother Mary,” released in theaters on April 17, 2026. The Oscar-winning actress said she enjoyed the challenge of the role but remains committed to her identity as a performer in cinema rather than pursuing singing professionally. She shared these remarks during an exclusive interview while promoting the psychological thriller in New York. Hathaway emphasized that her work in the film was strictly artistic and not a step toward a music industry career.

The actress explained that she prepared for the demanding role by studying real-life pop performers and learning from professionals closely involved in music production and choreography. She received guidance from Charli XCX, who contributed to the film’s soundtrack, along with choreographer Dani Vitale, to better understand stage performance and energy. Hathaway said this preparation helped her appreciate the discipline and endurance required in live music performances. However, she made it clear that she sees herself primarily as an actress who expresses emotion through storytelling rather than live musical expression.

While reflecting on her experience, Hathaway described pop stars as highly skilled performers who combine stamina, confidence, and charisma while performing under intense physical pressure. She noted that their ability to deliver complex performances in challenging conditions impressed her deeply during preparation for the role. At the same time, she explained that her own artistic approach is more controlled and expressive through character work rather than direct personal performance. This difference, she said, reinforces why she prefers acting over music.

Hathaway further stated that she enjoys working behind a creative “filter” in acting, which allows her to express emotions through characters rather than presenting herself directly to audiences. She explained that this method gives her a sense of artistic distance while still allowing emotional depth in her performances. According to her, this distinction is a key reason she does not feel drawn toward becoming a recording artist or live performer. She added that acting gives her the freedom to explore different identities without stepping into real-life musical performance.

Meanwhile, Hathaway is also experiencing a busy professional year with multiple major projects releasing within a short period of time. Alongside “Mother Mary,” she is set to reprise her role as Andy Sachs in “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which reunites her with several original cast members. The sequel continues the story years after her character’s time working under Miranda Priestly, expanding the narrative with new characters and evolving storylines. The film is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, adding to her active cinematic schedule.

Overall, Hathaway’s comments highlight her strong commitment to acting while balancing high-profile projects across different genres in the entertainment industry. She made it clear that although she enjoyed exploring a musical role, she has no intention of shifting her career focus away from film. Her upcoming projects continue to position her as a leading figure in Hollywood with diverse roles and ongoing audience appeal. The actress remains focused on storytelling through cinema while leaving music performance to dedicated artists in that field.
