John Phelan removed from his role as US Navy Secretary amid Pentagon shake-up

US Navy Secretary John Phelan exits abruptly in latest Pentagon shake-up | World News - Business Standard

John Phelan has been removed from his role as US Navy Secretary, marking another major leadership change within the Pentagon as the United States continues its military engagement with Iran. The sudden decision comes amid growing tensions within the defense establishment and ongoing conflict in the region.

According to a senior administration official, Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth agreed that new leadership at the Navy was necessary. Phelan was informed of his removal before the announcement was made public, with officials confirming that the decision took effect immediately.

Defense Department spokesperson Sean Parnell acknowledged Phelan’s departure in a brief statement, thanking him for his service without elaborating on the reasons behind the move. Navy Undersecretary Hung Cao has been appointed as acting secretary in the interim.

Reports suggest that Phelan’s exit follows disagreements with senior Pentagon leadership, particularly with Hegseth. Sources indicated that tensions escalated over decision-making authority and communication channels, with Phelan reportedly bypassing established protocols on key defense proposals.

Phelan, a former financier and political donor, had been appointed after Trump’s re-election despite lacking prior military experience. His close ties to the president and direct engagement on strategic matters reportedly caused friction within the department.

The leadership change comes at a critical time, as U.S. naval forces continue operations in the Strait of Hormuz, enforcing a blockade during a fragile ceasefire. The broader conflict, which began earlier this year, has resulted in significant casualties and heightened global economic concerns.

Phelan’s removal is the second high-profile Pentagon departure in recent weeks, underscoring ongoing instability within military leadership during a period of escalating geopolitical tensions.
