The image reportedly showed an Israeli soldier striking a crucifix with an axe in the Lebanese village of Debel. The location was verified by Reuters, and local clergy confirmed the shrine belonged to a family garden. Religious figures described the act as deeply offensive and distressing.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the act contradicts Jewish values of tolerance and respect. He stated that he was saddened by the incident and strongly condemned it. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also called the act disgraceful and issued an apology to Christians affected.
The Israeli military said the incident is under investigation and described the conduct as inconsistent with its values. The Israel Defense Forces added that efforts are underway to assist in restoring the damaged statue. Officials emphasized disciplinary review procedures are being followed.
