Erdogan urges extension of Iran ceasefire

Published on: April 15, 2026 9:25 PM

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Türkiye is working to extend the Iran–US ceasefire and support ongoing diplomatic talks. He said Ankara is engaging with key regional and global actors to reduce tensions and maintain dialogue. The comments came amid continued instability in the Middle East.

Erdogan said Türkiye has been in close contact with the United States, Iran, and mediators including Pakistan. He stressed that diplomatic efforts must continue despite emerging obstacles in negotiations. He reiterated Türkiye’s position in favour of de-escalation and regional stability.

The Turkish president warned that Israeli attacks in Lebanon are undermining prospects for peace. He said continued civilian casualties are damaging efforts to sustain the fragile ceasefire environment. He urged all sides to seize the opportunity created by ongoing diplomatic channels.

Erdogan also noted that negotiations face challenges, particularly over the nuclear issue and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. He said discussions have not collapsed but have encountered significant setbacks. Türkiye, he added, is actively proposing measures to ease tensions and extend the ceasefire.

Diplomatic engagement is expected to continue, with upcoming regional meetings involving Türkiye, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Leaders, including Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are expected to attend. Erdogan emphasized that long-term peace requires sustained dialogue and a broader diplomatic approach.
