Iran insists Lebanon remain an integral part of ceasefire ahead of US talks

ISLAMABAD: Iran has delivered a clear message to the United States (US) ahead of upcoming negotiations, insisting that Lebanon remains an integral part of the ceasefire agreement and cannot be separated under any circumstances.

Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned, without directly naming Washington, that time is running out to address key issues. He emphasized that Iran and its regional allies consider Lebanon a permanent component of the truce framework, describing it as the first point in Tehran’s proposed 10-point plan.

Ghalibaf also referenced Pakistan’s position, noting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has publicly and clearly stressed the importance of including Lebanon in the broader ceasefire understanding. He said there is no room to deny or step back from this stance.

The Iranian leader cautioned that any violations of the ceasefire would come at a heavy cost and provoke a strong response. He urged all parties to act swiftly to de-escalate tensions, warning that failure to do so could worsen the situation.

Meanwhile, both the United States and Israel have maintained that Lebanon is not part of the Iran-related ceasefire arrangement. They have also rejected Iran’s initial 10-point proposal, opting instead to pursue discussions on a revised framework with Iran and Pakistan.

Details of the new proposals have not been made public, but diplomatic engagement is ongoing as Islamabad prepares to host high-level talks. With key disagreements still unresolved, the status of Lebanon remains a major sticking point ahead of the negotiations, highlighting the challenges facing efforts to achieve a comprehensive and lasting agreement.
