With the new Gemini feature, users can select a photo or video and receive AI-generated caption suggestions. These captions can be edited or deleted before sharing, streamlining the process of explaining a location’s vibe, menu updates, or other highlights. Currently, caption suggestions are available in English for iOS users in the U.S., with plans to expand globally and to Android devices soon.

The update also makes it easier to find appropriate images for sharing. By enabling media access for Google Maps on their devices, users can see recent photos and videos in the “Contribute” tab, which they can quickly post to inform the community. Google emphasizes that photos and videos help others understand a place more fully, from atmosphere to offerings.
Google has also revamped the way contributors track their impact. Total points earned from contributions are now visible in the “Contribute” tab, and user profiles display their Local Guide level. Updated achievement badges clarify whether a contributor is an “expert fact-finder,” “master photographer,” or “rising novice.” High-level contributors will also be easier to identify with new gold-colored profiles.

These improvements are designed to support Google Maps’ community of over 500 million contributors worldwide, who keep information up to date through photos, reviews, and videos. By simplifying contribution tools and providing better recognition, Google aims to make it easier for users to share meaningful insights, helping others decide where to visit and what to do.
