The aircraft, registered as AP-BGZ, had remained out of service since May 2025 due to the unavailability of essential spare parts. Following maintenance and technical clearance, the successful test flight signals its imminent return to commercial operations.
With the reintegration of the aircraft, PIA is set to strengthen its international flight operations, particularly on long-haul routes. The addition of the Boeing 777 is expected to enhance scheduling flexibility and help the airline meet rising passenger demand.
Boeing successfully conducted a critical Rejected Takeoff (RTO) test for the 777-9, confirming its ability to safely handle the extreme energy dissipation required at its maximum takeoff weight of 775,000 lbs (351,550 kg) in early 2026.

The development comes shortly after PIA resumed its flights to London after a six-year suspension. The first flight, PK-785, departed from Islamabad on March 29, carrying over 300 passengers, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s revival efforts.
The resumption of key international routes, combined with fleet restoration, reflects PIA’s broader strategy to rebuild its network and improve service reliability. Officials believe that bringing grounded aircraft back into operation will not only boost capacity but also support revenue generation.
Industry observers note that fleet availability remains a critical factor for airlines seeking to regain competitiveness in the international market. For PIA, the return of the Boeing 777 is seen as a positive step toward operational stability after a challenging period marked by financial and logistical constraints.
