WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has drawn attention after referring to the strategic Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump” during remarks on the ongoing conflict with Iran, before quickly correcting himself.

Speaking at a Saudi-backed investment forum in Miami, Trump insisted that Iran must reopen the vital shipping route as part of any potential peace agreement. “They have to open up the Strait of Trump — I mean Hormuz,” he said, later calling the slip a “mistake” but adding that “there’s no accidents with me.”

The comments came as Trump reiterated claims that negotiations were underway to end the month-long conflict, despite Tehran publicly denying that formal talks had begun. He maintained that Iran’s leadership and military capabilities, including its nuclear programme, had suffered significant damage during the war.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes, has been severely disrupted since the outbreak of hostilities, contributing to a surge in global energy prices and economic uncertainty.

Trump also suggested that reopening the waterway was essential for stabilising global markets and securing energy flows, while continuing to signal openness to a negotiated settlement. However, his rhetoric has remained mixed, combining diplomatic overtures with warnings of further action if conditions are not met.
The US president has previously floated ideas about renaming geographic and institutional landmarks, and reports indicate he has considered similar proposals related to the key maritime route.

The remarks come amid ongoing military tensions and diplomatic efforts, as global powers monitor the situation closely for signs of escalation or resolution.
