Turkey deploys F-16 jets, air defence to Northern cyprus

Published on: March 9, 2026 3:55 PM

Turkey has deployed six F-16 fighter jets and air defence systems to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus amid escalating regional tensions caused by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. The Defence Ministry said the move aims to strengthen the security of the Turkish community in the breakaway state and ensure readiness against potential threats. Officials confirmed that further measures will be taken depending on developments in the region.

The deployment follows an incident last week when an Iranian drone, reportedly launched by Hezbollah in Lebanon, struck the British Akrotiri air base in Cyprus. European powers have also increased military presence on the ethnically divided island, raising concerns over the escalation. Ankara criticized the European deployments, warning that these actions risk drawing Cyprus into the wider regional conflict.

Turkey reiterated that it does not recognize the Greek Cypriot administration in the south, the internationally recognized EU member, and remains the only country officially recognizing the Turkish Cypriot state. The Defence Ministry emphasized that the deployment is part of a phased security plan to protect northern Cyprus amid growing regional threats and ongoing military tensions in the Middle East.

Last week, NATO forces intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Iran into Turkish airspace, marking a serious escalation in the conflict. Turkey warned Iran against further missile attacks, while Israel and the U.S. continued striking Iranian targets, prompting retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the region.

Iran has recently intensified attacks, firing missiles at Israel following the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new leader after his father’s death. Israel responded by striking five oil facilities near Tehran, killing at least four people and sending thick smoke into the skies, demonstrating the rapidly intensifying regional volatility.

Analysts note that Turkey’s actions signal its commitment to safeguarding northern Cyprus and maintaining strategic readiness in the eastern Mediterranean. The situation remains tense, with military deployments and retaliatory strikes highlighting the fragile security environment and the risk of wider conflict.
