Published on: March 8, 2026 1:13 PM

International Women’s Day was observed across Pakistan and around the world on Sunday, as leaders and citizens highlighted the essential role women play in shaping societies and national progress. The day served as an opportunity to celebrate achievements while also renewing commitments to promote equality, protect rights, and empower women in every sphere of life.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to Pakistani women for their dedication and contributions to the country’s development. They emphasized that no nation can achieve sustainable progress without ensuring women’s active participation in economic, political and social life across all sectors of society.

This year’s observance carries the global theme “Rights, Equality and Action: For All Women and Girls,” reflecting a strong international commitment to advancing gender equality and safeguarding women’s rights. In his message, President Zardari noted that women have played a crucial role in Pakistan’s journey toward development, contributing significantly to national growth and stability.

The president also recalled the vision of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who stressed that women must stand shoulder to shoulder with men in building the nation. He highlighted the leadership of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto as a powerful symbol of courage and determination, while also praising the legacy of Fatima Jinnah and Nusrat Bhutto, whose struggles continue to inspire generations of women.

Furthermore, President Zardari noted that Pakistani women serve the country in diverse fields, ranging from aviation and education to politics and public service. He stressed the importance of removing discriminatory laws and harmful social practices that restrict women’s advancement and limit their opportunities in education, employment and leadership.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting women’s rights and creating an inclusive environment where they can realize their full potential. He stated that women are playing a transformative role in building a stronger and more prosperous Pakistan through their dedication in sectors such as healthcare, sports, governance and the armed forces.
