Sri Lanka rescues 30 from distressed Iranian ship near coast

Published on: March 4, 2026 3:25 PM

The Sri Lankan navy successfully rescued 30 people from a sinking Iranian ship after it sent a distress call near the country’s southern waters, officials confirmed on Wednesday. Authorities acted quickly to prevent a maritime disaster and coordinate emergency response efforts. The rescue operation highlights the navy’s readiness and commitment to safeguarding lives in regional waters. Sri Lankan authorities confirmed that all rescued individuals received immediate assistance upon reaching shore.

A defence ministry spokesperson stated that the rescue mission was launched promptly after receiving the ship’s distress signal, demonstrating effective coordination between military and civil maritime authorities. The Iranian vessel reported critical conditions off the coast of Galle, prompting swift naval deployment. Local media reported that several rescued individuals sustained injuries during the incident. Emergency services in Galle prepared to provide medical attention and necessary support to the survivors.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath addressed the parliament, confirming the rescue of the 30 individuals and assuring that Sri Lanka would take appropriate action regarding the distressed vessel. He did not provide further details about the cause of the distress or the condition of the ship. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the emergency call. Meanwhile, the survivors remain under medical supervision for treatment of any injuries.

Local reports indicated that the Iranian ship’s crew and passengers were safely transported to a hospital in Galle for examination and emergency care. Officials emphasized the importance of maritime safety protocols in preventing potential accidents. The navy continues to monitor the area and maintain readiness for any additional incidents. Coordination with foreign authorities ensures that any further assistance or investigation will be conducted efficiently.

The rescue operation underscores Sri Lanka’s strategic position along key shipping routes in the Indian Ocean. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough assessment of the Iranian vessel to determine the cause of its distress. This incident highlights both the risks of maritime navigation and the efficiency of Sri Lanka’s naval response capabilities. Regional observers noted the operation as an example of rapid crisis management and humanitarian assistance at sea.
