CM orders mandatory e-tagging of all vehicles in Punjab

Published on: March 3, 2026 3:10 AM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the mandatory installation of e-tags on all vehicles, including motorcycles, across the province and directed authorities to submit a comprehensive micro security plan within seven days.

Chairing a high-level law and order meeting, here on Monday, the chief minister took various decisions to enhance surveillance, border monitoring, and counterterrorism preparedness. The meeting approved the establishment of a Punjab Cyber Crime Investigation Unit along with the appointment of its head. A dedicated cell will address cybercrime cases affecting women and girls, and district-level online crime centres will also be set up.

The chief minister ordered a ban on movement through non-traditional provincial entry points and strict enforcement of drone restrictions. She approved installation of searchlights along provincial entry routes, rooftop security monitoring at checkpoints, and immediate procurement of advanced drone defence systems.

Emphasising proactive policing, she directed combing operations against criminals and terrorists to continue without interruption. The RMP unit, responsible for crowd management, will be provided modern equipment and advanced training. SOPs for Youm-e-Hazrat Ali (RA) will be finalised in consultation with religious scholars, whose role in maintaining peace was appreciated by the chief minister.

She commended Provincial Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and the Lahore Police for their timely handling of security situations across Punjab. Observing that vigilance is crucial to eliminate terrorism, Maryam Nawaz Sharif described the entry of a suicide attacker through a checkpoint as alarming and said complacency was not an option. “The methods of warfare have changed; we must prepare ourselves accordingly,” she said, stressing collective effort and alertness to maintain peace and stability in the province.

Separately, Maryam Nawaz lauded the rich and vibrant culture of Balochistan, saying that every cultural day reflects a beautiful tradition and a renewed commitment to one’s values.

In her message on Baloch Culture Day, the CM emphasised that the culture of each province of Pakistan deserves respect and forms an integral part of the nation’s collective identity.

The CM described Baloch culture as deeply captivating, noting that “though the flowers may be different, the bouquet is one.” She highlighted the dignified white turban, intricately embroidered Balochi attire, and traditional dances as symbols of a heritage that resonates with all.

CM Maryam Nawaz said that Baloch culture embodies love, courage, and hospitality, representing a graceful blend of bravery and warmth. She added that promoting cultural traditions is essential to acquaint the younger generation with their heritage and roots.

The CM, referring to her recent visit to Quetta, said that the remarkable hospitality and enchanting cultural expressions she witnessed there truly won her heart.
