The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a fine of Rs5 million on each member of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad following what it described as an “underwhelming” campaign, according to a report by ESPNcricinfo on Monday.

The report stated that the penalties were not related to disciplinary breaches but were instead directly linked to the team’s performance during the tournament. The fines were reportedly imposed immediately after Pakistan’s group-stage defeat to arch-rivals India national cricket team, where a subdued display resulted in a 61-run loss.

Players were informed that the financial penalties could have been waived had the team progressed to the semi-finals. However, Pakistan failed to secure a spot in the last four, leading the board to uphold the sanctions.
Historically, the PCB has taken strict action against players, though such measures have typically been framed around disciplinary concerns rather than on-field performance. According to the report, there were no internal disciplinary issues within the squad during the tournament, making the fines unusual and potentially unprecedented in nature.
Pakistan’s campaign ended despite a narrow five-run victory over Sri Lanka national cricket team in a Super Eight clash in Kandy. Prior to that, the team struggled to defeat any major side in the competition, which ultimately cost them a semi-final berth.

Following the exit, captain Salman Agha acknowledged the team’s shortcomings. Speaking to reporters, he admitted the squad had “underperformed” throughout the tournament and cited poor decision-making in pressure situations as a key factor behind their elimination. However, he stopped short of making an immediate decision about his future as skipper.
