Trump to address state of the union amid domestic, global challenges

Published on: February 24, 2026 5:02 PM

US President Donald Trump will deliver his State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday at a critical moment, as his approval ratings decline, the economy shows signs of slowdown, and tensions with Iran rise. The prime-time speech offers Trump an opportunity to rally support for Republicans ahead of the November midterm elections, highlighting his policy achievements and laying out his administration’s priorities to a national audience.

Trump’s appearance follows a turbulent period for his administration, including a Supreme Court ruling overturning his global tariff regime and new economic data showing higher inflation and slower growth. The president faces domestic challenges such as a partially shut-down Department of Homeland Security, public outrage over immigration policies, and the ongoing fallout from the government’s handling of files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The address is also expected to cover Iran, with Trump potentially making the case for military intervention over its nuclear programme. US officials report that warships are being deployed to the Middle East, reflecting the administration’s readiness for possible military operations. Analysts warn that Trump may use the speech to justify pre-emptive measures while asserting US influence in the region.

Trump will also respond to the Supreme Court’s decision on tariffs, arguing the court erred and outlining alternative measures to reinstate key levies. Additionally, he plans to tout his record on economic growth, private-sector investments, tax cuts, border enforcement, and deportation campaigns, despite polls showing Americans remain unconvinced about improvements in affordability and cost-of-living challenges.

Democratic lawmakers have indicated they will largely boycott the speech, with more than 20 members of the House and Senate attending an outdoor rally instead. Virginia Governor Abby Spanberger will deliver the official Democratic response, while Senator Alex Padilla will present the Spanish-language rebuttal. The political stage is set for a highly watched address, with national and international attention focused on Trump’s messaging and policy agenda.

The televised State of the Union will also allow Trump to summarise his achievements, connect with voters, and outline strategies to influence the upcoming midterm elections. Analysts note that while the speech offers an opportunity to unify Republican support, it also carries risks if Trump deviates from the script or provokes further partisan backlash.
