Russia-Ukraine war hits four-year milestone, conflict still rages

Published on: February 24, 2026 4:32 PM

Ukraine is commemorating four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, attacking from multiple directions on February 24, 2022. The assault, initially called a “special operation” by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was expected to end quickly with Kyiv’s surrender, but resistance was far stronger than anticipated, prolonging the conflict. European officials traveled to Kyiv to show solidarity with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people, who continue to defend their country.

The war has inflicted devastating losses on both sides, with heavy casualties reported among soldiers and civilians alike. Independent media estimate that at least 200,000 Russian troops have died since the invasion began, while Ukraine has also suffered significant military and civilian losses. Despite international diplomatic efforts, no comprehensive peace agreement has been reached, and fighting continues across multiple fronts in the east and south.

European leaders have emphasized their commitment to supporting Ukraine through both military and humanitarian aid. Sanctions against Russia remain in effect, aiming to weaken its economy and military capacity, while Ukraine continues to receive defensive weapons, financial support, and diplomatic backing to counter Russian advances. The conflict has also highlighted Europe’s reliance on energy security and reshaped alliances across the continent.

The invasion has caused widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, and public services, forcing millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes. Internally displaced people and refugees face harsh winter conditions and ongoing shortages of food, medicine, and shelter. Humanitarian agencies warn that continued fighting threatens to exacerbate the suffering of civilians and prolong the recovery process.

Russia’s initial strategy of a rapid victory has failed, leading to a prolonged and unpredictable war. Both sides continue to launch offensives and counteroffensives, while diplomatic channels, including U.S. mediation, have struggled to achieve meaningful progress. Analysts warn that without a political settlement, the humanitarian, economic, and military costs are likely to rise further in the coming year.

As Ukraine enters its fifth year of resistance, the conflict remains a central focus of global security and foreign policy. Observers emphasize the importance of sustained international support for Kyiv and continued monitoring of Russian military movements, as the war continues to shape regional stability and international relations.
