DSP among five police officers martyred in Kohat attack

Published on: February 24, 2026 3:32 PM

A deadly terrorist attack in the Shakardara area on the outskirts of Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, left five police personnel dead, including DSP Asad Mahmood Khan, on Tuesday. The attack occurred while the police team was transporting detainees for investigation, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement in the region. Militants reportedly opened indiscriminate fire on the vehicle and set it on fire before fleeing, creating chaos at the scene.

Those martyred in the assault included DSP Asad Mahmood Khan, Inspector Anar Gul Khan, the DSP’s driver, his reader Wahab Gul, Constable Mudassar, and police official Syed Amir Abbas. Tragically, two detainees, Yousaf Khan and Samiullah, also lost their lives, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the violence. Three other officers—Zahoor Khan, Aqab Hussain, and Mohib Rehman—sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention.

Following the attack, Kohat police deployed a large contingent to secure the area and launch search operations aimed at locating the militants. Authorities worked swiftly to restore safety in the region, while security forces remained on high alert to prevent any further incidents. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from political and law enforcement officials, emphasizing the need for coordinated counter-terrorism measures.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the killings, describing the attack as “extremely tragic” and praising the sacrifices of the police officers. He assured full support and solidarity with the families of the deceased, directing authorities to provide the best possible medical care for the injured. Afridi highlighted that the K-P Police form the first line of defense against terrorism, and their dedication and bravery must not be forgotten.

The Kohat attack comes a day after militants targeted Federal Constabulary personnel in Bahadar Khel, killing three FC officials in a coordinated assault that included a drone strike. During that incident, terrorists also attacked ambulances transporting the injured, setting the vehicles on fire, and wounding five others, including a Rescue 1122 official. These consecutive attacks reflect the persistent threat posed by banned militant groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) factions.

Authorities continue to investigate the Kohat attack and are working to identify the perpetrators, while ensuring heightened security across vulnerable regions. Law enforcement and military operations are expected to intensify to prevent future attacks. Officials also urge the public to remain vigilant and support security forces in maintaining peace and stability in the province.
