Japan’s iron lady wins big, promises major reforms

Published on: February 9, 2026 4:23 PM

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi achieved a historic victory as her ruling coalition secured a supermajority in the lower house, strengthening her mandate to introduce wide-ranging economic and national security reforms. The outcome marks the strongest electoral performance for her party in decades and positions her as one of the most powerful leaders in modern Japanese politics.

Leading the Liberal Democratic Party, Takaichi won 316 seats out of 465, while her alliance with the Japan Innovation Party raised the coalition total to 352 seats. This two-thirds majority allows her government to override the upper house, ensuring smooth passage of legislation and reducing resistance to her policy agenda.

Moreover, the 64-year-old leader called a rare winter snap election to capitalize on her high approval ratings since taking office in October. Despite heavy snowfall across several regions, voter turnout remained strong, reflecting public confidence and interest in the direction of her leadership.

On the economic front, Takaichi has pledged to suspend the 8 percent sales tax on food to ease pressure on households facing rising prices. While the move has gained popular support, financial experts remain concerned about funding challenges, especially given Japan’s already record-high national debt.

At the same time, business leaders welcomed the results, viewing the victory as a sign of political stability that could support long-term growth. Many believe that a stable government will improve investor confidence and help Japan navigate economic uncertainty more effectively.

Beyond economics, Takaichi has adopted a firm security stance, particularly toward China, and openly discussed Japan’s response to a potential Taiwan crisis. Her approach has drawn criticism from Beijing but earned praise from regional allies, signaling a more assertive role for Japan in regional geopolitics.
