Scotland crush Italy by 73 runs for first T20 World Cup win

KOLKATA – Scotland recorded their maiden victory at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, defeating Italy by 73 runs in a dominant display at Eden Gardens on Monday.

Batting first, Scotland posted a commanding total of 207, thanks to an exceptional innings from George Munsey. Munsey scored 84 off 54 balls, hitting 13 fours and two sixes, while Michael Jones contributed a steady 37 off 30 deliveries. Brandon McMullen and Richie Berrington added crucial runs in the latter stages, ensuring Scotland maintained a strong position. McMullen remained unbeaten on 41 off 18 balls, including four sixes, as Scotland closed with momentum.

Italy struggled in reply, bowled out for 134 in just 16.4 overs. Ben Manenti top-scored with 52 off 31 balls, and Harry Manenti added 37 runs, but the rest of the lineup faltered. Skipper Wayne Madsen was ruled out mid-match due to a shoulder injury and did not bat.

Scotland’s bowlers were relentless, led by Michael Leask, who took 4 wickets for just 17 runs in his four overs. Mark Watt claimed two wickets, while Brad Currie, Brad Wheal, and Oliver Davidson chipped in with one wicket each, restricting Italy to well below the target.

The victory marks a historic moment for Scotland, showcasing their growing strength in international T20 cricket. The team’s blend of experienced players and young talents proved decisive, with both batting and bowling firing in unison.

Scotland will now look to build on this momentum in their remaining group-stage matches, while Italy will hope to recover after a challenging outing in their T20 World Cup debut.
