Third-degree fire engulfs two factories in Landhi EPZ, traffic hampers rescue efforts - Pakistan - Aaj English TV

KARACHI: A major fire that erupted at a plastic factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone (EPZ) escalated on Friday, with officials confirming that at least two factories are now affected by a third-degree blaze as firefighting operations continue.

According to authorities, the fire initially broke out on the first floor of a plastic manufacturing unit, rapidly engulfing a large portion of the facility before spreading to a neighbouring warehouse used for shoe storage. Deputy Commissioner Malir Sameeullah Sheikh said the flames were now advancing toward a third factory, prompting emergency teams to focus on preventing further spread.

As a precautionary measure, all factories in the affected area were evacuated to ensure the safety of workers. Earlier, officials had declared the incident a third-degree fire after it spread across multiple sections of the industrial zone, making containment increasingly difficult.

Fire officials said more than 10 fire tenders, along with snorkels and water bowsers, were deployed at the scene. Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan stated that firefighting teams were working continuously to stop the fire from spreading to additional units within the Landhi Export Processing Zone. However, some emergency vehicles faced delays due to traffic congestion, prompting authorities to clear access routes for rescue operations.

Sindh Inspector General of Police directed SSP Malir and SP Traffic to reach the site and secure the surrounding areas. Sindh Rangers personnel also arrived to assist with rescue and firefighting efforts, deploying additional manpower to manage traffic and maintain a secure perimeter.

Emergency arrangements were enforced at hydrants in Landhi and Sherpao, while the Karachi Water Corporation ensured an uninterrupted water supply by deploying additional tankers to support firefighting operations.

No casualties have been reported so far, and officials said investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire. Sindh Chief Minister has taken notice of the incident, sought a detailed report from the Commissioner Karachi, and issued emergency directives to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and fire services. Authorities have also been instructed to ensure support for affected workers and their families.
