Trump heads to G7 summit amid US-Iran deal shift

Trump heads to G7 summit with wind at his back after announcing agreement aimed at ending Iran war

EVIAN-LES-BAINS: World leaders are gathering in France for the G7 summit as US President Donald Trump arrives following a major diplomatic breakthrough with Iran that is expected to reshape discussions on global security and energy.

The summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, brings together the G7 nations — France, the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom — at a time of heightened geopolitical tension. Key topics on the agenda include the Iran conflict, the war in Ukraine, global trade disputes, artificial intelligence regulation and energy security.

Hours before departing Washington, Trump announced a deal aimed at ending the US-Iran conflict, including a ceasefire and steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The development is expected to influence discussions among G7 leaders, particularly regarding oil supply stability and regional security in the Middle East.

The Iran agreement comes at a sensitive moment for the summit, which was initially expected to focus on escalating tensions in the Middle East and divisions between the US and European allies over foreign policy. Analysts say the sudden diplomatic shift could change the tone of negotiations, especially as European leaders assess the impact on energy markets and maritime security.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also attending parts of the summit and is expected to push for continued Western support in the ongoing war against Russia. The issue has become less prominent in US priorities, adding further complexity to discussions.

Other scheduled talks include cooperation on artificial intelligence, protection of young internet users, and economic assistance for developing countries. Leaders from India, Brazil, Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are also participating in selected sessions, reflecting the G7’s growing outreach beyond its traditional membership.

The summit will conclude after three days of discussions, with expectations that leaders will issue joint statements on security, economic stability and global cooperation amid rapidly shifting international dynamics.
