Karachi Zoo hosts flower show and Qawwali night

Published on: February 6, 2026 11:00 AM

KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday inaugurated a colourful flower show along with a Qawwali evening at the Karachi Zoo, drawing a large number of citizens and marking another step towards reviving the city’s cultural and recreational life.

According to officials, the exhibition featured around 30,000 marigold plants, 10,000 potonia plants and nearly 40,000 flowers of various kinds, including roses, arranged across different sections of the zoo to enhance its visual appeal. Families, students and nature enthusiasts were seen visiting the venue to enjoy the floral displays and cultural performances.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Wahab said the primary objective of organising the flower show was to raise public awareness about the importance of plants, trees and environmental protection. He added that cultural activities such as Qawwali were equally important to restore Karachi’s traditional vibrancy and strengthen the city’s social fabric.

The mayor said that the city administration was taking practical steps to transform Karachi Zoo into a more beautiful, recreational and family-friendly space. He noted that the zoo was not only a place for wildlife conservation but also an important public space where citizens could engage in healthy recreational activities.

He announced that more cultural, recreational and environmental events would be organised across Karachi to revive its vibrant social life and provide positive entertainment opportunities for residents. Such initiatives, he said, help promote environmental awareness while also reconnecting citizens with the city’s cultural heritage.

Mayor Wahab also encouraged citizens, organisations and institutions to hold their events at Karachi Zoo, explaining that the revenue generated would be used for the welfare and care of the animals. “The zoo belongs to the people, and every step taken here is for the benefit of citizens and the well-being of wildlife,” he remarked.

He highlighted a visible increase in public participation at city events, saying that gatherings which once attracted only limited crowds were now drawing thousands. This, he said, reflected Karachiites’ pride in their city and their strong attachment to its identity.

The event was attended by City Council Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Jaman Darwan, representatives of civil society, party workers, media personnel and a large number of citizens.
