The Punjab government has decided to form drone squads across Punjab including Lahore, with an aim to ensure enforcement and effective surveillance in various matters. According to police officials, 20 drones equipped with modern night vision cameras will be purchased for Lahore, while a total of 159 modern night vision drones will be acquired for the entire province. Out of these, 98 drones will be allocated to different tehsils and 41 drones will be allocated to districts. According to police officials, these drones will be used to monitor crime hotspots across Punjab, which will also be used for traffic management, identification of encroachments and prevention of traffic accidents. Along with this, complete and special training will be provided to the relevant staff to fly the drones. It has been further informed that the drone squad will be used for monitoring under the supervision of the Safe Cities Authority, while all the drones will be connected to the Safe Cities system for live monitoring. According to officials, the government has approved the provision of funds for this project and it is expected that the process of purchasing drones will be completed during the current financial year, which will further improve law and order and the system of civic amenities in the province.
