Punjab Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bokhari has expressed deep sorrow and regret over the tragic incident that occurred near Data Darbar at Bhati Chowk, Lahore. She stated that the Government of Punjab is sincerely apologetic to the family of the 24-year-old woman and her 10-month-old daughter who lost their lives after falling into an open manhole. She offered prayers for the departed souls and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, emphasizing that such a tragedy should never have happened.
Azma Bokhari acknowledged that a video was initially shared based on incorrect information provided by relevant departments, which led to confusion. She said she never feels reluctant to admit a mistake or apologize, adding that if her resignation could help deliver justice to the affected family, she would be willing to consider it. However, she clarified that, in line with the Chief Minister’s direction, she bears no personal fault or direct responsibility for the incident, as the same information being circulated to other authorities was also shared with her.
The Information Minister further stated that Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz took immediate notice of the incident, monitored the situation closely, reviewed the victim’s last known location through Safe City cameras, and questioned the concerned officials to establish the facts. The Chief Minister also convened an emergency meeting to expedite the investigative process and granted the inquiry committee an additional 48 hours to determine accountability.
She noted that preliminary reports suggest certain departments termed the incident “impossible,” creating confusion, while complaints have also surfaced regarding inappropriate behavior toward the affected family. These allegations are currently under investigation. Bokhari asserted that no negligence or administrative failure will be tolerated and that all responsible individuals will be brought to justice.
She added that the Chief Minister maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding the safety of manholes and strict implementation of safety SOPs. If any negligence is proven, no one will be granted leniency. She stressed that effective monitoring of construction sites is the responsibility of the relevant officers, and any lapse in this regard is unacceptable.
The Minister also stated that the Government of Punjab is keen to hold local government elections soon to further improve urban governance through the inclusion of elected public representatives. She assured that, following a thorough and transparent investigation into the Data Darbar tragedy, strict action will be taken against those responsible and the affected family will be ensured justice at all costs.
