Spanish authorities have announced their largest-ever cocaine seizure at sea after intercepting a Europe-bound container ship carrying nearly 10 tonnes of the drug. Consequently, the raid highlights Spain’s ongoing role as a major entry point for narcotics into Europe.
The Cameroon-flagged vessel had departed from Brazil and was impounded in the Atlantic Ocean, where police discovered 9,994 kilograms of cocaine hidden in 294 packages within a shipment of salt. Officials confirmed the operation involved close coordination with international partners.

Thirteen crew members were arrested during the raid, and authorities also seized a firearm allegedly used to guard the drug consignment. Moreover, the operation involved US, Brazilian, UK, French, and Portuguese authorities, reflecting the global cooperation needed to tackle maritime drug trafficking.
Spain’s strategic location, coupled with strong ties to Latin America and proximity to Morocco, a major cannabis producer, makes the country a key target for international drug shipments. Analysts note that its ports remain critical transit points for Europe-bound narcotics.

This record seizure surpasses the previous high in 2024, when Spanish police confiscated 13 tonnes of cocaine from a container ship arriving at the southern port of Algeciras from Ecuador. The haul underscores ongoing challenges in combating drug smuggling at sea.
Authorities said that continued vigilance, intelligence sharing, and coordinated international operations are essential to preventing large-scale drug trafficking. Spain’s law enforcement agencies remain committed to curbing organized crime and protecting European borders from illicit substances.
