Trump touts role in ending Pak-India conflict, pushes for Nobel Peace Prize

Published on: January 10, 2026 11:52 AM

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Friday once again highlighted his role in brokering a ceasefire between Pakistan and India during the May 2025 conflict, arguing that his intervention saved millions of lives and merited the Nobel Peace Prize.

Speaking to the media after a meeting with oil and gas executives at the White House, Trump referenced Norwegian Nobel Committee embarrassment and said, “Some wars were going on for 36 years, 32 years… India and Pakistan, where already eight jets were shot out in the air. I arranged a ceasefire in rapid order without nuclear weapons.”

Trump claimed that global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, acknowledged his success in halting conflicts that had defied resolution for years. “I can’t think of anybody in history that should get the Nobel Prize more than me… I care about saving lives. I’ve saved tens of millions of lives,” he said, recalling his September meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who reportedly credited Trump with saving “a minimum of 10 million lives” during the crisis.

Tensions between India and Pakistan erupted in April 2025 following a deadly terror attack in occupied Kashmir, which Islamabad strongly denied responsibility for. The escalation led to a brief military confrontation, with both sides exchanging airstrikes. Trump intervened in May to declare a ceasefire, a move he has repeatedly cited as justification for Nobel recognition.

Trump also praised Pakistan’s military leadership, singling out Chi’ef of the Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir as “highly respected” and “a great fighter,” reiterating his admiration for their role in de-escalating the conflict. Despite Trump’s claims, India has disputed that the ceasefire was a result of US intervention, maintaining that bilateral mechanisms played the key role in halting hostilities.
