LAS VEGAS: Sleek electric cars powered by artificial intelligence dominated the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, highlighting advances in Self-driving cars and promising a future where humans may no longer need to steer. Companies showcased vehicles capable of Level 4 autonomy, where the car drives itself and responsibility lies with the machine, not the passenger.

Waymo’s robotaxis in the United States and Apollo Go in China demonstrated the reliability of fully autonomous rides. Uber also unveiled a Lucid robotaxi at the event, aiming to deploy a fleet in San Francisco later this year.
Start-ups are entering the market as well. Silicon Valley company Tensor presented its luxury personal robot car, equipped with 34 cameras, five lidar lasers, and over a hundred sensors, with tests authorised in California and potential expansion to Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and the UAE. The vehicle, priced at around $200,000, will offer limited autonomous driving at first.
Despite technological progress, regulatory approval and public acceptance remain major hurdles. Experts said fully autonomous vehicles face legal and liability challenges, while current consumer-ready models focus on Level 2 assisted driving, where human drivers remain responsible.

Tesla, Xiaomi, and BYD continue to offer advanced assisted driving systems, allowing vehicles to navigate safely while keeping the driver in control. Meanwhile, Nvidia introduced Alpamayo, an AI platform designed for autonomous driving, capable of reasoning in complex traffic scenarios and explaining its decisions, likened to a “ChatGPT moment for physical AI.”
CES 2026 highlighted how AI is accelerating autonomous vehicle capabilities, combining cutting-edge sensors, software, and electric mobility. While mass adoption may still be years away, the event demonstrated that self-driving technology is increasingly practical, safer, and poised to reshape transportation.
