Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is facing intense criticism following the signing of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Politicians and religious leaders in India publicly targeted the actor over the decision, citing national sentiment concerns.

Amid the backlash, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed KKR to release Mustafizur from their squad, according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. He stated the directive was issued due to “recent developments that are going on all across” and added that KKR would be allowed to request a replacement player.

KKR reportedly acquired Mustafizur at a December auction for INR 92 million, sparking criticism and allegations that the signing went against “national sentiments.” Religious leaders, including Jagadguru Swami Rambhadracharya and Devkinandan Thakur, publicly condemned the move, labeling Shah Rukh Khan a “traitor” and linking their criticism to alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
Political figures also voiced opposition. Shiv Sena (UBT) urged KKR to select Indian players instead, while party leader Sanjay Nirupam called for government intervention. BJP leader Sangeet Som similarly criticized the signing, warning that players like Mustafizur could face hostility if they entered India. Maharashtra Minority Commission Chairman Pyare Khan called for decisive action to protect minority communities and advocated banning such players.
