Karachi has officially joined the list of global cities operating double-decker buses, with the Sindh government announcing that the new service will be available to the public from January 1, 2026.
Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Wednesday that the buses were introduced in the city and would undergo trial runs on December 31 before opening to commuters the following day. He said the launch fulfilled a commitment made by the provincial government in October 2024 to improve public transport in the metropolis.

“Today marks the beginning of double-decker bus services in Karachi,” the minister told reporters, adding that the buses would help ease long-standing mobility issues in a city of over 23 million people.
According to Mr Memon, the first route will operate from Malir to Sharea Faisal, with plans to expand the fleet and introduce more routes in the coming months. He said the chief minister had instructed authorities to introduce double-decker buses on major roads across Karachi during 2026.

Currently, over 125,000 people travel daily through the Peoples Bus Service in Karachi. The minister also announced that new routes for electric buses would be designated across Sindh, including Karachi, starting next week. He stressed that improving public transport remained a priority for the provincial government, noting that services under the People’s Bus Service project were currently serving more than 125,000 commuters daily in Karachi.
Mr Memon said these transport services were being offered at subsidised fares to provide relief to citizens. “The Sindh government pays the subsidy to facilitate passengers,” he said.
Responding to questions about the poor condition of roads, the minister said the Sindh cabinet had allocated over Rs9 billion for road repairs in industrial areas. He added that several infrastructure projects were under way, including work on the Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway.

Asked whether the double-decker buses would also serve tourist routes to promote a positive image of Sindh, Mr Memon said the government planned to extend services not only to tourist destinations but eventually to all major roads across Karachi and the province.
