Fresh FIR lodged against lawyers over alleged assault on SHO

Published on: December 31, 2025 12:53 PM

Police in Karachi have registered a fresh first information report (FIR) against several lawyers for allegedly assault and threatening a station house officer (SHO), following earlier cases linked to the roughing up of YouTuber Rajab Butt during a court appearance.

According to police, the new FIR was lodged on the complaint of City Court SHO Jahangir Bhutto, who accused a group of lawyers of storming the City Courts police station on December 30. The lawyers were protesting the registration of a case against their colleagues over the alleged assault on Butt a day earlier.

The FIR states that around 40 to 50 lawyers, led by Advocate Abdul Fatah Chandio, Advocate Abdul Wahab Rajper and Advocate Riaz Ali Solangi, forced their way into a temporary police setup at the City Courts. They allegedly created a disturbance and demanded the registration of a counter-case against the YouTuber and his lawyer.

SHO Bhutto said that when he arrived at the police station around 2pm, the protesting lawyers confronted him over the FIR registered against them. He claimed he attempted to explain that the case had been registered on a complaint and in accordance with the law, but the group allegedly responded with verbal abuse and physical violence.

According to the FIR, the SHO was kicked and punched, obstructed from performing his official duties, and issued death threats before police staff intervened. The lawyers reportedly continued chanting slogans as they left the police station.

The case has been registered under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code, including rioting, criminal intimidation, assault on a public servant, intentional insult, and unlawful assembly. Three lawyers have been nominated by name, along with 40 to 50 unidentified individuals.

The development follows an earlier FIR registered on the complaint of Butt’s lawyer, who accused several lawyers of assaulting the YouTuber at the City Courts during the hearing of his bail plea in a case related to alleged blasphemous content.

Advocate Solangi, one of the nominated lawyers, has previously claimed that Butt had used offensive language against lawyers in online content and later apologised following the altercation.
