Pakistan secures halal meat export deal with Tajikistan

Published on: December 30, 2025 3:19 PM

Pakistan has made a significant breakthrough in regional trade cooperation by securing an agreement to export halal meat to Tajikistan, officials said on Monday, marking a new milestone in bilateral economic relations between the two countries.

Under the agreement, Pakistan will export 143,000 tonnes of halal meat to Tajikistan, with the total value of shipments estimated at $14.5 million. The initiative has been facilitated through the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), which aims to boost exports and strengthen economic partnerships with regional and global markets.

Officials said the agreement reflects growing trust in Pakistan’s halal certification standards and meat processing capabilities. With improved trade facilitation measures and streamlined logistics, authorities believe bilateral trade between Pakistan and Tajikistan could expand to as much as $300 million in the coming years, enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration.

Beyond trade, the two countries have also taken steps to deepen cooperation in the education sector. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been announced to promote the exchange of students and teachers, with the goal of strengthening academic collaboration and people-to-people ties.

The development comes amid Pakistan’s broader push to expand its halal meat exports globally. Recently, Pakistan also concluded agreements with Brazil to enhance collaboration in the livestock, dairy and meat sectors, underscoring a growing focus on international partnerships in high-potential industries.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif approved the Halal Meat Export Policy and directed authorities to present a comprehensive three-year roadmap to boost exports. Chairing a meeting on sectoral reforms, the prime minister stressed the need for a coordinated approach involving federal ministries and provincial governments.

He instructed relevant departments to submit practical proposals to improve livestock productivity, cold storage capacity and export-related infrastructure. The prime minister also emphasised aligning halal meat production with international standards to ensure competitiveness in Muslim-majority markets and beyond.
