Missing California girl found dead as mother taken into custody

Published on: December 24, 2025 2:58 PM

Ashlee Buzzard update: Mother of Melodee, missing from Lompoc, CA for months, arrested after girl's body found, police say - 6abc Philadelphia

The body of nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard, who had been missing from Southern California since early October, has been found, marking a tragic end to a months-long search and prompting authorities to take her mother into custody. Investigators confirmed that the child’s remains were discovered earlier this month in another state, reportedly Utah.

According to officials, Melodee had not been seen since at least early October, and prolonged school absence records led investigators to believe she may have died around that time. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office announced that it would hold a press conference on December 23 to share major developments in the case, as new evidence came to light.

Before the scheduled briefing, deputies were seen arresting Melodee’s mother, Ashlee Buzzard, at her home in Vandenberg Village. While authorities have not yet publicly detailed the specific charges related to the child’s death, the arrest represents a significant turn in the investigation that had already raised concerns about the mother’s actions and cooperation.

Investigators said Buzzard had been uncooperative throughout the search for her daughter, drawing further suspicion. She was previously arrested in November on suspicion of false imprisonment, though those charges were later dropped. Officials have indicated that her behaviour during the investigation remained a key focus for detectives.

A critical element of the case centres on a road trip taken by the mother and daughter between October 7 and October 10, during which they travelled from California to Nebraska. Surveillance footage from a rental car agency reportedly showed Melodee wearing a wig, which detectives believe may have been used as a disguise.

Authorities also revealed that Buzzard allegedly changed license plates multiple times during the trip. She later returned to Lompoc alone, without her daughter, raising further alarm among investigators.

The discovery of Melodee’s remains has brought grief to the community and renewed calls for accountability, as law enforcement continues to piece together the events that led to the child’s death and determine the full extent of responsibility.
