Two teenage sisters were found dead under mysterious circumstances at their residence in Lahore’s South Cantonment area on Monday, prompting police to launch a murder investigation after rejecting the family’s claim that the girls had taken their own lives.

The deceased were identified as Kiran, 19, and Maryam, 17. Their bodies were shifted to the city morgue for postmortem examination after police intervened and stopped their burial in Sheikhupura, the family’s native district.

According to police officials, the girls’ father, Latif, initially told authorities that his daughters had committed suicide by consuming poison. He claimed the sisters were traumatised following the death of their elder sister, Sumeera, 25, who was allegedly murdered in Kasur by her in-laws. Latif said he had registered a murder case against them and investigations in that case were ongoing.

However, police described the circumstances surrounding the deaths as “highly suspicious”. An officer said the family had failed to inform local police about the incident, adding that authorities only learned of the deaths after being contacted by Kasur police.

Acting on the information, the South Cantonment station house officer rushed to the residence but was told that the bodies had already been moved for burial. A police team travelled to Sheikhupura, took the bodies into custody and transferred them for autopsy.

An FIR was registered against unknown suspects on the complaint of a police sub-inspector, stating that the sisters may have been murdered and that family members could be concealing key facts. During questioning, police said the family failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.

Forensic experts collected samples from the scene and the bodies, which have been sent for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of death. Police said further action would be taken in light of the postmortem and forensic reports.
