Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has directed the immediate formation of independent vigilance committees to monitor repair works on major roads across the city. The move aims to ensure that minor road-related issues are identified and resolved within 24 hours of being reported.

The directive was issued during a high-level meeting of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) Engineering Department at the KMC head office. The meeting reviewed progress on ongoing development projects across the metropolis.
The mayor said the vigilance teams would proactively inspect roads, identify defects and report issues directly to the Engineering Department without waiting for public complaints. He stressed that responsibility for identifying problems lay with officials, not citizens.

“These teams will regularly visit roads, submit progress reports and inform higher authorities,” he said, adding that each district must have an active vigilance committee. He warned that strict action would be taken against departments failing to comply with the 24-hour resolution timeline.
Mayor Wahab noted that separate emergency tenders for minor repair works had already been approved and that funds collected through municipal taxes were available. He said there should be no justification for delays, given that both resources and financing were in place.
During the meeting, officials briefed the mayor on development schemes under the District Annual Development Programme, the Provincial ADP and the World Bank-funded Competitive and Livable City of Karachi (Click) projects. Senior officials said mega projects under the Click initiative had crossed 70 per cent completion, with several expected to be inaugurated before March next year.
The mayor also instructed departments to expedite codal formalities for projects on Natha Khan Road and Jahangir Road. He emphasised accountability, transparency and timely execution as key priorities for the city administration.

“Our focus is on delivering visible improvements for citizens,” he said, adding that public expectations from the municipal administration were high. Senior KMC officials, including the municipal commissioner and engineering department heads, attended the meeting.
