Published on: December 17, 2025 4:42 PM

A new phase of public shopping has begun in Punjab with the launch of modern fruit and vegetable markets across wholesale markets in the province. The initiative aims to improve facilities, transparency, and access to quality produce for both buyers and traders.

Authorities have restored all water filtration plants in the modern vegetable markets to ensure the supply of clean drinking water. New staff has been deployed, waste collection systems introduced, and clean, fully functional toilets made available in 188 markets across Punjab.

Help desks have been established to assist buyers, while rate boards have been prominently displayed to promote price transparency. More than 266,000 streetlights have been made operational, significantly improving visibility and security within market premises.

Environmental measures have also been introduced as green waste generated from these markets will be utilized to produce biogas and poultry feed. In addition, drainage systems have been fully restored, and covers installed on all manholes to enhance sanitation and safety.

For the first time in Punjab, a “tracking on wheels” system has been launched to monitor the supply and demand of fruits and vegetables. Every truck transporting produce into the province has been linked to the Safe City Authority’s tracking system to improve oversight and curb irregularities.

Plans are underway to establish modern vegetable markets in Pakpattan, Kasur, Sahiwal, Mian Channu, Sheikhupura, and Mandi Bahauddin. A dedicated supply chain has also been set up to ensure the availability of fruits and vegetables at wholesale rates for residents of Murree.

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed the adoption of modern farming techniques to support the supply of off-season vegetables. She also ordered strict action against dishonest price control magistrates, including dismissal and imprisonment.
