Court issues notice over Dhurandhar film defaming PPP

Published on: December 16, 2025 1:21 PM

KARACHI: A sessions court on Monday issued notices to police over an application seeking registration of a case against the director, producer, and crew members of the Indian film Dhurandhar for allegedly defaming the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

The applicant, PPP activist Mohammad Amir, claimed the movie portrayed the party as sympathetic to terrorists and labeled Lyari as a “terrorist war zone.” He said the film used images of former PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, party flags, and rally visuals without legal permission, causing reputational harm.

A PPP party worker has filed a petition in the Karachi court against the entire cast of Dhurandhar for using images of Banerjee Bhutto, the party flag & real footage in the film without permission.

An additional district and sessions judge (South) directed the SP-Complaint Cell and Darakhshan SHO to submit a detailed report by Tuesday. Amir filed the application under Section 22-A & B of the Criminal Procedure Code, naming the director, producer, actors, and other crew members as proposed accused.

The applicant argued that the film’s promotional material and trailer contained defamatory and provocative content that could incite public unrest. He claimed that the movie’s portrayal could attract offences including defamation, criminal intimidation, provocation with intent to cause rioting, and promoting enmity between different groups.

Amir said he had previously submitted a written complaint to the Darakhshan SHO requesting registration of an FIR, but the police had not acted on it. He requested the court direct the police to register the case and conduct a proper investigation.

The court’s notice underscores rising concerns in Pakistan regarding foreign films that allegedly misrepresent local politics and sensitive areas. Legal experts say the outcome could set a precedent for handling cross-border defamation claims in the entertainment sector.
