“Eden” heads to Netflix after quiet box office run

Published on: December 15, 2025 2:56 PM

The R-rated survival thriller Eden, starring Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas, is set to arrive on Netflix on December 23, nearly five months after its theatrical release. Directed by Ron Howard, the film will now reach a much wider global audience through streaming during the holiday season.

Netflix confirmed the release date, positioning Eden as one of its notable late-year additions for viewers drawn to intense, historical survival dramas. The streaming debut comes after the film struggled to gain traction in cinemas despite its high-profile cast and established director.

Eden opened in theatres alongside another Sydney Sweeney-led project, Americana, with both films failing to perform strongly at the box office. Its Netflix release offers the thriller a second chance to find viewers who may have missed it during its limited theatrical run.

The film is inspired by real-life accounts of European settlers who relocated to the Galápagos Islands in the early 1920s, seeking isolation and a simpler life. Instead, the settlers face internal conflicts, power struggles and psychological strain that turn survival into a brutal test. While based on true events, some historical elements depicted in the film have been disputed.

Sydney Sweeney stars as Margret Wittmer opposite Daniel Brühl as her husband Heinz. Jude Law appears as Dr Friedrich Ritter, with Vanessa Kirby playing Dore Strauch. Ana de Armas takes on the role of Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, whose arrival escalates tensions within the group.

Critically, Eden received mixed reviews. While performances and atmosphere were widely praised, critics raised concerns over pacing and tonal inconsistency. Still, many noted that the ensemble cast remained the film’s strongest asset.
