Erdogan: Black Sea cannot become a zone of confrontation

Published on: December 13, 2025 5:45 PM

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday warned that the Black Sea should not turn into a confrontation zone between Russia and Ukraine. He emphasized that safe navigation is essential for all countries. The warning came after several recent strikes in the region, including attacks on ports and vessels.

The caution followed a Russian air strike that damaged a Turkish-owned vessel in Ukraine’s Odesa port. Erdogan had raised the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier at a summit in Turkmenistan. He also called for a limited ceasefire regarding attacks on ports and energy facilities.

Erdogan stressed that Russia and Ukraine must avoid actions that escalate tensions in the Black Sea. He highlighted Turkey’s role in maintaining relations with both sides and controlling the Bosphorus Strait, a vital route for grain and oil exports.

Over recent weeks, multiple attacks have targeted Russia-linked tankers in the Black Sea, including drone strikes claimed by Kyiv. Ankara strongly condemned these attacks, summoning envoys from both Russia and Ukraine to protest the incidents.

The Turkish president expressed hope for broader peace efforts, indicating plans to discuss a peace plan with U.S. President Donald Trump. He added that peace “is not far away” and diplomatic solutions remain possible.
