Strong Earthquake Hits Northeast Japan, Tsunami Advisory Issued

Published on: December 12, 2025 9:34 AM

 Strong Earthquake Hits Northeast Japan

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 struck northeast Japan on Friday, triggering a tsunami advisory and increasing public concern. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that waves up to one metre could reach coastal areas. The quake hit at 11:44 a.m. off Aomori’s coast and had a depth of 20 kilometres.

The tremor followed a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake that struck the same region late Monday. That earlier earthquake caused widespread alerts and forced thousands to remain cautious. Authorities have warned that more strong shocks may occur within a week. This advisory remains in place for residents across multiple prefectures.

The government urged people from Hokkaido to Chiba to stay alert for another major earthquake. Officials stressed that the risk of aftershocks was unusually high. Communities near the Pacific coast were advised to monitor updates and stay prepared. Emergency teams remained on standby across the region.

Earlier on December 8, a powerful 7.6-magnitude quake rattled northeast Japan and triggered tsunami warnings. It struck at 11:15 p.m. and prompted immediate evacuation orders. Sirens and public alerts urged residents to leave coastal zones quickly. The nighttime timing added to the public’s anxiety.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that tsunamis as high as three metres could strike after the December 8 quake. Authorities quickly issued warnings for Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. Emergency officials emphasized that even smaller waves could threaten coastal communities. Preparedness measures were activated across ports and fishing towns.

Tsunamis between 20 and 50 centimetres were later observed at several ports. These waves were smaller than feared, but officials urged continued caution. Coastal patrols monitored the rising waters and kept residents informed. Maritime traffic was advised to remain at a safe distance.

Japan frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. However, the recent series of powerful quakes has heightened national concern. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and update advisories. Residents in affected areas remain cautious as aftershocks continue.
