Pakistan has welcomed the United States’ approval of a $686 million upgrade package for its F-16 fighter jets. The package will extend the aircraft’s operational life until 2040 and enhance their combat performance. The approval was confirmed in a letter sent by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency to Congress on December 8, 2025.
The upgrade includes advanced communication tools, modern avionics, and improved cryptographic systems. It also covers secure Link-16 data networks that support real-time battlefield communication. The package further includes training, simulators, spare parts, and complete logistical support.
According to officials, the upgrades will modernize Pakistan’s Block-52 and Mid-Life Upgrade F-16 fleets. These improvements will ensure that the aircraft remain effective in evolving regional and global security environments. The support will also help Pakistan maintain long-term operational readiness.
The DSCA stated that the sale supports US foreign and national security interests. It added that the package will help Pakistan stay interoperable with US forces and regional partners in counter-terrorism operations. The agency also said the sale will not change the military balance in the region.

A spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Office welcomed the decision and called it a positive development. He said the upgrade will strengthen Pakistan’s defence capabilities and enhance the safety of its aircraft fleet. He added that the package will support safe and effective F-16 operations for many years.
The package includes $37 million worth of major defence equipment. This includes 92 Link-16 units and six unexploded Mk-82 bomb bodies. The rest of the $649 million will cover software upgrades, hardware modules, cryptographic systems, identification tools, training, and maintenance support.
Lockheed Martin will serve as the main contractor for the programme. No additional US personnel will be stationed in Pakistan for implementation. Pakistan had originally applied for the upgrade in 2021, and officials say the approval ensures the F-16 fleet remains a key element of national defence until 2040.
