Call of Duty has announced it will stop releasing back-to-back Modern Warfare and Black Ops games following negative feedback and disappointing sales of the recently launched Black Ops 7. The franchise’s decision comes after consecutive releases of Modern Warfare in 2022 and 2023, and Black Ops in 2024 and 2025, which failed to impress many gaming enthusiasts.
The development team stated on their official website that the move aims to provide a unique and high-quality experience each year rather than incremental updates. They emphasized that the franchise will focus on meaningful innovation to satisfy players’ expectations while avoiding rushed releases.

Black Ops 7, which released last month, experienced a 63 percent drop in sales compared to Battlefield 6 in Europe. This sharp decline reflects dissatisfaction among players, highlighting the challenges of releasing major titles in quick succession without substantial innovation.
The franchise acknowledged criticism from the gaming community, promising to prioritize delivering content that players want and deserve. Officials indicated that future releases would be better planned, ensuring quality, creativity, and engaging gameplay instead of merely meeting annual deadlines.

Moreover, Call of Duty confirmed that while specific plans are not being revealed now, the focus will remain on enhancing the overall gaming experience. The company pledged to “deliver and overdeliver” on customer expectations, aiming to regain trust and rebuild enthusiasm for the series.
With this strategy shift, fans can expect longer development cycles for each game, allowing developers to refine graphics, storylines, and multiplayer modes. Analysts believe this approach may strengthen the franchise’s reputation and attract both returning and new players in the competitive gaming market.
