Petrol Price Cut Announced for Next Two Weeks

ISLAMABAD: Petrol prices in Pakistan are expected to increase by Rs2.40 per litre starting December 15, 2025, for the upcoming fortnight. The government will announce the revised fuel rates on the same day, taking into account trends in the international oil market and preliminary estimates for various petroleum products.

Officials say the government is considering raising the profit margins of oil marketing companies (OMCs) and petroleum dealers to keep pace with inflation. This adjustment could result in higher retail prices for petrol and diesel.

The Petroleum Division has submitted a summary recommending the margin increase, which is set to be reviewed by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in its meeting today (Tuesday).

Negotiations were held on December 3 between Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik, OMC owners, and the dealers’ association. During the talks, the Petroleum Division assured stakeholders that revisions in profit margins and commission rates would be considered. The summary proposes raising the profit margin from Rs1.10 to Rs1.28 per litre, impacting the overall cost to consumers.

Currently, OMCs earn Rs7.87 per litre on petrol and diesel, while dealers receive Rs8.64 per litre, resulting in combined margins of Rs16.51 per litre. Any proposed increase in prices will require ECC approval followed by ratification from the federal cabinet.

Earlier this month, the government had reduced petroleum prices to provide relief amid rising fuel costs. On December 1, 2025, petrol prices were lowered by Rs2 per litre to Rs263.45 per litre, while high-speed diesel saw a reduction of Rs4.79 per litre, bringing its price to Rs279.65 per litre. The upcoming revision indicates a partial rollback of this recent relief, reflecting fluctuations in global oil markets.
