Gas leak explosions leave several critically injured in Islamabad

Published on: December 4, 2025 10:14 AM

ISLAMABAD: A man died in hospital on Wednesday after sustaining critical injuries in a gas leak explosion at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) on Tuesday, police said. The deceased was identified as Sanaullah, a naib qasid at the university. Seven others, including five students and a university clerk, were also injured in the blast.

Sher Zadha, the university clerk, remains in critical condition with 60 to 65 per cent burn injuries. The explosion occurred due to a gas leak combined with a short circuit in a room, which also damaged an adjacent room. Authorities are investigating the cause of the leak and the extent of the damage.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, a gas leak explosion in Hamza Colony, Naseerabad, injured a 37-year-old woman and her 18-month-old daughter. The blast shattered window glasses and a wooden door, causing panic among residents who rushed outside after hearing the explosion.

Police said the incident happened when the woman held a matchstick near a gas stove, triggering the explosion. Rescue 1122 teams transported the burn victims to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). The mother suffered burns over 60 per cent of her body, while her daughter sustained 25 per cent burn injuries.

Officials have urged residents to exercise caution with gas appliances, especially in poorly ventilated areas, and to ensure regular maintenance of gas cylinders and connections. Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding safety standards in domestic and institutional settings.

Authorities are monitoring the conditions of the injured and have launched investigations to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, hospital staff continue providing intensive care to those severely burned.
