ISLAMABAD – President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the people of Palestine on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, observed on Saturday. They emphasised that Pakistan stood “shoulder to shoulder” with Palestinians in their struggle for freedom, dignity, and statehood.

President Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering backing for the establishment of an independent, sovereign, and contiguous Palestinian state based on pre-June 1967 borders, with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital. He paid tribute to the resilience of the Palestinian people, praising their courage and steadfastness in the face of historic and ongoing challenges.

He highlighted Pakistan’s deep-rooted ties with Palestine, noting that solidarity with the Palestinian cause predates Pakistan’s own creation. Referring to the 1940 Lahore Resolution, he said it included a clear message of support for Palestine, reflecting the emotional and historical bond between the two nations.

The president said Pakistan had consistently raised its voice against Israeli aggression in Gaza at all international forums. He added that Pakistan played a constructive role in the Gaza peace efforts with the hope of ending the immense suffering caused by Israel’s military actions and violations of human rights.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned decades of occupation, violence, and the systematic denial of Palestinians’ right to self-determination. He said more than 70,000 people in Gaza, including women and children, had been martyred in recent years, while entire neighbourhoods were destroyed and essential infrastructure reduced to rubble.

Despite this devastation, he said the Palestinian people continued to demonstrate unmatched resilience and hope. The prime minister stressed that sustaining a ceasefire, ensuring humanitarian access, and enabling UNRWA’s operations were essential steps toward lasting peace.

He emphasised the urgent need for Israel’s complete withdrawal from all occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank. Pakistan, he said, would continue to stand firmly with Palestinians in their rightful struggle for freedom, dignity, and peace.
