The Afghan Taliban spokesperson had alleged that Pakistan carried out strikes in Khost, Kunar, and Paktika provinces, but Gen Chaudhry told state media that no attacks on civilians had taken place. “Pakistan Army has not attacked civilians inside Afghanistan. Whenever Pakistan attacks someone, it announces it,” he said.

Gen Chaudhry emphasized that Pakistan sees no distinction between good and bad Taliban and urged the Taliban government to operate as a state, not as non-state actors. He also questioned how long the interim government in Kabul would remain in power.

Bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained, with cross-border terrorism and the activities of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) at the center of disputes. Islamabad has repeatedly demanded action from Kabul to stop militants from using Afghan territory to target Pakistan.

Dialogue efforts, mediated by Turkey and Qatar, began after October border clashes but have so far failed to resolve key differences. The third round of talks concluded in early November without a solution, prompting the Afghan Taliban to suspend trade ties with Pakistan. Islamabad has linked the resumption of trade and regional energy projects to Kabul’s action against terrorist groups.

On another front, Gen Chaudhry addressed the court martial proceedings against former intelligence chief Gen (r) Faiz Hameed, currently in custody since August 2024. He called the trial a legal matter and urged the public to avoid speculation, promising updates once proceedings conclude.

Gen Hameed faces charges of engaging in political activities, violating anti-espionage laws, and abusing authority, stemming from a Supreme Court-directed complaint by the owner of Islamabad’s Top City housing society. This is one of the highest-profile court martial cases in Pakistan’s history, as Gen Hameed is the first former ISI chief to face such proceedings.
